My Journey from Architecture to Day Trading

The Resolution That Changed Everything

I never anticipated that a New Year’s resolution would pivot the direction of my life, but that’s exactly how my journey into day trading began. Reflecting on this, I realize the importance of setting goals and staying committed, especially during the toughest of times. Today, I want to share with you not only a recap of my day’s trades but also the backstory that got me here, beginning with that pivotal resolution.

I’ll be honest; day trading is no easy feat, and even with years of experience, it’s not all win-win. It’s like a tactical game of patience and strategy. On this particular trading day, it was a game of consistent, albeit diminishing, returns across four stocks. Although I came up just short of my $5,000 daily goal, I recognized the trend – my wins were getting smaller with each trade. I decided to stop while I was ahead, and that decision to quit for the day is a microcosm of the discipline that’s been integral to my success.

From New York City to the Comforts of Vermont

The world we live in is unpredictable, and I learned this firsthand during the Great Recession. Working for an architectural firm in New York City was exciting, but the financial crisis left its mark. New projects dwindled, and the writing on the wall became clear – the firm’s future, and by extension, my job, was precarious.

But between the architectural designs and project management, there was a calling back home to Vermont, a tonic for my city-bred stress. The bucolic landscapes of Vermont provided a stark contrast to my cramped city apartment and the panic attacks it seemed to foster. It wasn’t long before I surrendered to the pull of my home state, with its promise of peace and space for my outdoorsy pursuits.

Embracing Change and Uncertainty

Initially, my transition to Vermont appeared smooth. I balanced part-time work between a local firm and my previous employer in the city. However, as the work faded away, I was faced with the stark reality of needing to make ends meet. It was a sobering reminder that change is the only constant and that one must adapt to survive – a principle that holds just as true in day trading.

Managing change wasn’t new to me, though. Perhaps it was my inherently anxious and insecure nature that equipped me to navigate these unpredictable currents. I’ve learned to appreciate these aspects of my personality because they’ve shaped the path that led me to where I am today.

A Legacy of Scarcity

Growing up in Vermont instilled a mindset of scarcity within me, a product of generational experiences beginning with my great-grandfather. The Great Depression left a profound impact on him, which trickled down through subsequent generations. This legacy of loss and scarcity engrained in me a relentless drive to secure my future – a drive that later fueled my foray into day trading.

Carving My Own Path

Witnessing my mother’s layoff after forty years of dedicated service solidified my belief in the illusion of job security in traditional employment. It spurred me to seek out a path of self-sufficiency, one where I could dictate the terms of my income and stability. This resolve led me to explore the world of small business ownership – but without significant capital or employment, the options seemed narrow.

Ultimately, all these experiences and personal characteristics converged, guiding me towards day trading. It was a field where I could apply my analytical skills, discipline, and risk appetite. It allowed me to create a structure that depends on my decisions alone, not the uncertain stability of a nine-to-five job. It was here, in the volatile yet invigorating dance of the markets, that I found my true calling.

Final Thoughts

As I continue to trade and educate others about this challenging profession, I look back on these experiences with gratitude. They’ve taught me resilience, risk management, and the importance of pursuing a path that aligns with one’s innate tendencies and life lessons. So, here’s to the resolutions that change our lives – may we all find the courage to set them and the strength to see them through.
